Poster of David Hockney’s The Sunbather 1966.
The Sunbather is one of a group of swimming pool paintings that Hockney created after his move to Los Angeles as a young artist. He was fascinated by the subject as unlike in Britain, Californian swimming pools were used all year round, and projected a vibrant image of vitality. In this painting, as in Portrait of Nick Wilder, Hockney worked on the problem of representing reflections on water.
